DRH and Francisco Vidal from the MCC

Photos by Lez

Sooooo...got an email from Debbie Ocoboc hooking us up with some more DRH download love! She said she walked in on the first song, but was able to start recording on the second. Also said: "so in the hall of the boat by the big bar people sometime set up this was david and vidal and gabe dixon on piano and matt mangano on bass and dave barnes on drums...quite a band".

Quite a band indeed! A big thanks to Lez for the awesome photos, and to Debbie for recording and sharing with all of us, and a big thanks to the band for being fierce! The recording is about 26 minutes, untracked, and the set list is as follows:

I Wish (by Stevie Wonder)
Raspberry Beret (by Prince)
Leaving Las Vegas (by Sheryl Crow)
What's Going On (by Marvin Gaye)

Get it HERE.

Alumni Just Get Better With Age

From the Sixthman Blog:

The Semi-Circle Jerks

The Alumni Crowd

For the past couple of years, Sixthman has always tried to do something special for repeat guests. Usually in the form on an onboard spending credit, but this year we wanted to give everyone something a little more special. After months of discussion, budgeting, and designing, we came up with a universal alumni plan that had longevity and that we thought could eventually span over all of our cruises. We decided to present it to The Rock Boat first to see if they were as excited about it as we were.

Turns out, they sure were.

In this new program, when you are a guest of a certain number of Sixthman events, you earn a prize. Could be a t-shirt, track jacket, or bathrobe in the case of TRB, but we also had something extra special for everyone who had attended more than 3 previous events (that included over 600 people!).

We put a call out to a bunch of our artists asking them to participate in an exclusive alumni show for this group of people. The response was great, and we ended up with a concert jam packed full of talent – Ken and Drew from Sister Hazel, Marc Broussard, Pat McGee, David Ryan Harris, Marc Broussard, Josh Kelley, Aslyn, Dave Yaden, and Oakhurst. (Incredible, right?) The whole group (nicknamed the Semi-Circle Jerks) got together for a couple of short rehearsals to work through some cover tune favorites.

All of the alumni filed in and most sat on the floor. We encouraged floor seats because the show was completely unplugged. And, at this point, no one knew who was playing. After the guests were in, Andy and I introduced the new band, and everyone went nuts. It was the perfect mix for this crowd.

The Semi-Circle Jerks played The Weight, Seven Bridges Road, The Joker medley, and Rock Boat favorite – Drift Away. The whole show gave me such chills. It was a powerful moment to hear the band play completely unplugged and the crowd singing along to every song. Really amazing.

The artists were completely hilarious, ribbing each other and having a lot of fun the entire time. And, if you could picture Marc Broussard with a tight blue shirt, navy blue spandex shorts, a sweatband on his head, skating around the stage on heelies after every song, maybe you could get a better idea of the fun we al had.

We had a couple people record it, and got a little bit of video footage, so when that’s loaded and ready to go, I’ll be sure to post it somewhere. It was too good not to share.

Alumni, thanks for coming back year after year. I hope you know how much we appreciate you. Newbies, now you have something great to look forward to from now on. You know, besides the actual cruise, right?

WHO WAS WHERE WITH WHOM AND WHERE YOU WAS? WHAT? YES.

A blog from Mr. Scotty Crowe:

David Ryan Harris and BOOYAH (and more!) returned for Round 2 at Hotel Cafe last night:

All I Need (Al Green interlude, Everything's Not Lost)*
Hold My Fire*
Sweetest Berry**
Yesterday Shutting Down***
Sittin' On Top Of The World***
Pretty Girl (Shining Star, No One, The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, Sexual Healing)*
For You

*band comprised of BOOYAH (Michael Chaves and Sean Hurley) and JJ Johnson, creating BOOYAHWHAT
**band comprised of BOOYAHWHAT and Bob Reynolds, creating BOOYAHWHATDEN
***band comprised of BOOYAHWHATDEN and John Mayer, creating BOOYAHWHATDENAWWWCHYEAH(snap)
all other songs performed solo (yes, for those of you keeping score at home, that's only one of 'em)

What a day. After spending the day prepping for and playing a little private set with BOOYAHWHATDENAWWWCHYEAH(snap)'s other configuration, we rolled to Hollywood for the big Hotel Sauna (or Sauna Cafe or Sauna Sauna, point being it was WARM in that mofo) show. The kids came out like no shoes and were not disappointed.
We got HOLD MY FIRE early in the night, which set up one of the most rockin', deepest groovin' SWEETEST BERRYs I've ever heard. Bob added some sweet sweet saxiness. John jumped up for YESTERDAY SHUTTING DOWN and SITTIN' ON TOP OF THE WORLD (a Howlin' Wolf cover), all the guys trading solos in the latter and all the people soul-clapping in the former. DRH brought back the love to close the set (got to understand he loves the kids). A special night indeed for everyone in the room.

A few visuals to go with that essay, all via my man Gari Lamar Askew (with his Ron Gant-esque swagger)...see you next week...

Don't act like i never toldya.
